Title: Risky Business
Speaker: Robert Luedtke

Is there an easy way to visualize the riskiness of different portfolios when compared to each other? We’ll explore several ways to evaluate portfolio risk. Warren Buffett defines risk as the permanent loss of capital. Academics often define it as volatility—but what does that really mean? Perhaps the easiest number to understand is maximum drawdown. Maybe the risk most investors worry about is running out of money in their senior years. Are there ways to make this less likely to happen without using annuities? Who is William Bengen? We’ll explore several metrics and methods, including:

  • Treynor Ratio, Ulcer Index

  • Modigliani Risk-Adjusted Performance

  • Using a basket of different risk measures to help figure out the least risky portfolio between several options

Let’s break it down in a practical and approachable way.

Robert Luedtke is Co-President of the Austin/San Antonio Chapter of AAII. He is a long-term investor who has studied many investment books and methods, and attended multiple Warren Buffett annual meetings, including the most recent one. He invests in stocks, bonds, and real estate.
